San Francisco Butoh Festival, Season 8 Part II: The Grand Finale

by Allan Ullrich, Dance Critic

Sunday evening, it was a case of the simpler, the more successful. The two solo numbers emerged the most finished and purposeful. In "Amai,'' Michael Sakamoto, an artist from Los Angeles, wandered through the theater in a business suit, carrying a briefcase and handing out business cards to patrons, then, on the stage, shed his societally imposed skin to reveal an evening gown under his suit coat. The visuals were intriguing, the music was Japanese pop material and Sakamato's gestures - economical and anguished - provided a glimpse into an act of heroic transformation.
