Theater Review - "Fugue"

by Luis Reyes, Theater Writer

Michael Sakamoto draws from the Japanese butoh tradition in his Fugue, four vignettes dismantling the iconography surrounding male pop idols through the decades. His last character, a Glenn Gouldesque piano virtuoso, satirizes the commodification of such classical artists in today's sound-bite culture. Sakamoto moves like a marionette with stylized syncopation, continually molding his face into different expressions for each character as if organically donning and shedding masks.
