Dance Review - "Doctor Chi!"

by Sasha Anawalt, Dance Writer

A curious dance-ish event is taking place tonight and through the weekend at Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica: Michael Sakamoto's "Doctor Chi!" Trained with Rachel Rosenthal, he brings to the stage and to his work also a strong background in Japanese butoh. So "Doctor Chi!" might be about an evil German megalomaniac who butters his sexual bread on both sides Ð a kind of Austin Powers/Dr. Evil goes Cabaret -- but Sakamoto accents the movements values with twitchy, broken, mesmerizing butoh. And, in the intriguing dance sections, he slips between that which verges on annoying and clichŽ and that which is rare and strange and somehow beautiful.
