While mediums are traditionally female, more males have appeared in the last and current generation as socially acceptable. Among younger mediums, there is also a high percentage of transvestite and transsexual male mediums, who bridge the traditional gap between male and female roles and identities.

Pictured here is Gong, a 23 year-old gay male student from Chiang Mai University. Born and raised in Lampang, he began his activities as a medium in secret at age 12. His family has since accepted his role as a medium and even built a traditional spirit shrine at the family home to host his activities.
