Since 2008, I have been working on a photo essay in Chiang Mai and Lampang in Northern Thailand researching regional versions of Faun Pii (spirit dance). Faun Pii is an ancient ritual form of spirit possession and ancestor worship practiced by mediums. I attended numerous trance dance and related possession rituals.
Thanks to Waewdao Sirisook for translation, Ajarn Vithi Panichpant, Ajarn Don, and Thitipol Kanteewong for consultation, and to the many mediums who continue to freely open up their practices and lives to my wandering eyes.
Summer 2008 research was sponsored by the University of California's Pacific Rim Research Program. Summer 2009 research was sponsored by the Asian Cultural Council's Asian Art and Religion Fellowship.
